World Environment Day takes place every June 5th. Hosted each year since 1973 by a different country and led by the United Nations Environment Program, World Environment Day has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. Millions of people from across the world take this day for engagement to protect the planet. 50th World Environment Day this year is hosted by Sweden.
Although there is only one earth, we currently use the equivalent of 1.6 planets to sustain our lifestyles. As we've all heard time and time again, the world will not be able to withstand this stress forever. We already see drastic changes in the climate, decreasing air quality, extreme weather conditions, degraded farmland, etc.
To keep global warming below 1.5 degrees celsius and hopefully reach net-zero, alternative energy sources and accurate data are necessary. Wind energy has the potential to avoid 327 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year. That is the equivalent of 71 million cars' emissions. If our wind assets can perform optimally, we will be able to transition into cleaner and more reliable energy grids. This way, we will be able to combat the negative effects of using more resources than the planet can handle.
In honor of the 50th World Environment Day, we put a chart together using stats from Wind Europe's Wind Power Numbers Daily. These are the 5 European countries with the most wind production on June 5, 2022.
The wind production is different each day. On June 5th, European countries were able to generate up to 33% of their country's power demand. Europe as a whole was able to produce 14.6% of its power share that day. This means Europe was able to move towards using almost 15% less fossil fuels in just one day. At the end of May, Denmark was able to exceed their total electricity demand two days in a row. On May 27th, they generated 94.9 GWh of wind power. This was 108.1% of their power demand. The day before, they accounted for 111.5% of the country's consumption. If Europe is able to maintain this renewable power generation, they would be able to rely solely on renewable energy, rather than fossil fuels to power the grid.
